MERCY LEWIS
Mercy Lewis was a maid in the Putnam household during the Trials. She was nineteen years old. It is possible that she accused over fifty people during the Trials.
Although there is not much about Mercy during the Trials, there is possible cause as to why she may have acted out. Lewis grew up in Falmouth, Maine. This is where King Philip's War began. Lewis lost her family in the war. There is no way to imagine the stress she must have felt or the pain of witnessing everything that happened. The Trials could have been a way for her to relieve that stress.
Supposedly, after the Trials, Lewis went to Greenland (an outlying area of Portsmouth, New Hampshire) to live near her aunt. She had a child, probably with Charles Allen, and later lived in Boston.
