SARAH GOOD
Sarah Good was one of the first to be identified as a witch. Her life had been rough, and it caused her attitude to suffer. She spent most her time begging for shelter and food. The problem was that she was never grateful for what she received. It has been said that she would walk away muttering curses, whether she received help or not (Boyer, 204-206). She claimed that she was reciting the Ten Commandments. However, at her trial, she could not recite a single one. Also, she had not been in church for over a year (Hansen, 36). Her attitude and the fact that she was, indeed, an outsider helped make her an easy target for the Trials.
Good was first called out by Tituba. The young girls then claimed that Good's apparition was hurting them. It was not long before Good was arrested. Her husband was afraid that she was a witch or that she would become one. Her daughter, Dorcas Good, even testified against her (Hansen, 32-33). Dorcas was later examined and confessed that she was a witch (Hansen, 55). I have issues with this. Dorcas was only five years old. No one should have taken her seriously. Her mother's fate should not have been sealed with her confession.
On July 19, Sarah Good would be executed. Before she was hanged, Reverend Nicholas Noyes asked her to confess. He said that she knew she was a witch. Good's reply was, "You are a liar. I am no more a witch than you are a wizard, and if you take away my life God will give you blood to drink." This chilled the crowd. Only a witch would say a curse before she dies (Hansen, 126-127).
